Suspended solids can be separated from the water source by passing the water through media filters. Chemicals can also be added to aid in the removal of the suspended matter. Aquamarine distribute and use the following type of media in their filters:
Silica and anthracite can be used individually or in multimedia applications for suspended solids removal. Garnet is a dense medium which is used as the bottom layer of multimedia filters containing anthracite and sand.
AFM® Glass Media for Suspended Solids
AFM® (Active Filter Media) is manufactured from recycled glass bottles and used as a replacement for sand filtration media for the reduction of suspended solids in feed water. Aquamarine Water Solutions offers all grades of AFM® media, as replacements or for use in a specific water treatment solution:
- There are four grades (Grade 0-3) of AFM® media, each with different nominal particle sizes
- AFM® media is an NSF certified, amorphous alumino-silicate (glass) that can double the performance of a sand filter
- AFM® media is up to 100 times better at removing sub-5 micron particles
- Grade 1 is verified to achieve log 3 reduction (1000 times) down to 4 microns with no coagulation or flocculation
- AFM® media is stable and offers predictable performance
- AFM® resists biofouling, biocoagulation and transient wormhole channelling of unfiltered water
- No biofouling means greatly reduced Legionella risk from the filter
- The product water has at least 50% lower chlorine oxidation demand than an equivalent sand filter
Katalox/Birm Media for Iron and Manganese
Iron and manganese fouling in water is a common problem faced by consumers. Ferrous iron in borehole water oxidises with oxygen causing red stains on walls, basins, baths, plants and other items that it comes into contact with. Manganese can cause unsightly black or brown stains. The predominance of one form over another is dependent on the water's pH.
Iron and manganese in water also promote the growth of bacteria. These bacteria form thick slime growths on the walls of the piping system and on well screens. Variations in flow can cause these slime growths to separate from pipe walls, resulting in further problems downstream of a process. The reduction of iron and manganese concentrations is essential to also ensure the optimal performance of downstream membrane systems.
Aquamarine offer several systems to remove the iron and manganese content from the water. The choice of application is dependent on the concentration levels of iron and manganese in the water, other chemical and physical parameters of the feed water and the downstream processes involved.
Activated Carbon Media Comprising Coconut and Coal-Based Carbon
Carbon filtering works by adsorption, in which pollutants in the fluid to be treated are trapped inside the pore structure of a carbon substrate.
Activated carbon is highly effective at absorbing natural organic compounds, taste and odour compounds, and synthetic organic chemicals in drinking water treatment. In addition, activated carbon can remove free chlorine residuals and chloramine, as well as remove chlorine and organic colour from water.
Aquamarine provides organic sources of activated carbon media. These include: coal-based and coconut-based activated carbon media. Each is used in specific water treatment applications.
Suspended solids can be separated from the water source by allowing the water to settle under the effect of gravity. Clarifiers are typically used for this application, while chemicals like oxidants, coagulants and/or flocculants can also be used to assist the settling process. Sedimentation solutions are generally used as a pre-filtration step to remove bulk water contaminants. The design of Clarifiers is dependent, inter alia, on the following factors: feed water quality; particle size influencing settling rates, choice of chemicals used, retention time and so on.
Bag and Cartridge Filtration
Suspended solids can be separated from the water source by passing the water through bag or cartridge filters. The bag or cartridge filters are available in various micron sizes, the choice of which is dependent on downstream applications. Aquamarine are suppliers of bag and cartridge filter housings as well as various types of cartridge and bag filters.
Membrane filtration refers to the use of a membrane to separate particulate matter from a liquid medium. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration are typical membrane solutions that assist in removing particulate matter. Microfiltration membranes have a typical pore size of 0.1um to 10um, while ultrafiltration membranes have a typical pore size of about 003um. These membranes utilise a semi-permeable membrane in a low-pressure-driven process of separating suspended matter from soluble ions. Unlike media filtration, membranes provide an absolute barrier for the removal of bacteria, viruses, and colloids, capable of meeting increasingly stringent water-quality standards around the world, and providing a stable, reliable, and consistent water quality.
